Limassol Spoolbase Inaugauration

The Limassol Spoolbase was officially opened by the Minister of Communications and Works, Mrs Erato Kozakou Markoulli on Saturday 5th February 2011. The Spoolbase is an assembly unit for natural gas transport pipes, developed in collaboration with Technip, one of the world's leading companies for the design, engineering and construction of gas industry facilities. The Spoolbase will start operating on the 1st March 2011 and will employ more than 60 specialised personnel.

This state of the art unit has a specialised automated system to weld together pipes producing finished pipes of up to one kilometre in length. These pipes are then ‘spooled’ or ‘coiled’ in one continuous length of up to 15km to 18km onto specialised vessels which will carry them to their destination Offshore Egypt for the Burullus Project, where they will be laid.

Similar Spoolbases are found only in Norway, USA and Angola, giving the unit in Limassol the unique advantage of being the only one in the region ready to meet the huge requirement for future pipe installations in the Mediterranean and surrounding areas.
